Here’s something most people don’t know until they’ve been through it: “custom cabinets” doesn’t mean better cabinets. It usually just means slower and more expensive cabinets, because you’re paying for a factory to build them one at a time and ship them from wherever they happen to be built.

I work with a ready-to-assemble line out of a warehouse in Norton, Massachusetts — about 45 minutes from where I live and work. That warehouse stocks 14 colors, and because the inventory commitment is real, I can get a full kitchen’s worth of cabinets in 3 to 5 days, not the 16-to-20-week wait that’s become standard since the supply chain crunch a few years back. That’s not a downgrade. That’s the advantage.

The Three Things I Build Into Every Kitchen

Whatever cabinets you buy, from whoever you buy them from, there are three problem spots I see in almost every kitchen I walk into. I don’t treat these as upgrades — they’re standard on every job I do, because I got tired of watching people live with wasted space.

1. A Wire Basket System Instead of a Lazy Susan

The standard corner carousel that comes from the factory has a shoulder that’s too short — things fall off the back and disappear. I don’t install those. Every corner cabinet I build gets a wire basket system with adjustable-height shelving instead, so nothing gets lost and you can actually customize the spacing to what you’re storing.

2. A Real Pull-Out Solution for Blind Corner Cabinets

Blind cabinets — the ones where half the cabinet disappears behind the wall — used to be dead space, plain and simple. I retrofit stock cabinets with pull-out hardware that brings that entire blind space out into the room, so you’re not reaching into a black hole to find a lid.

3. A Drawer Base Right Next to the Stove

This is a small thing that makes a big difference: a wide drawer base positioned next to the range, sized for pots and pans. It’s a detail from my own kitchen-design background, and it’s one of the things that makes a kitchen actually work the way people cook, instead of just looking good in photos.

What I Don’t Do — On Purpose

Part of being straightforward about cost is being straightforward about scope. I don’t do cabinet refacing, custom-built cabinetry, or insurance-claim jobs. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’m not going to be the right fit, and I’d rather tell you that up front than quote you something I’m not set up to do well.
